World Polio Day, is observed every year on October 24.
In a third world country like India, it serves as an important reminder of our collective fight against poliomyelitis. Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that was once notorious for causing widespread paralysis and a lifetime of avoidable suffering. International vaccination drives have concluded in the complete eradication of this debilitating disease yet preventing its recurrence remains a shared responsibility—one that extends to enhancing holistic immunity and wellness through integrative complimentary approaches like homeopathy.
Let us Understand Polio a little better
Polio, is a viral disease caused by the poliovirus which is a communicable disease. It mainly affects young children and presents as irreversible paralysis. The virus spreads through contaminated food and water and ultimately impacts the nervous system. While 75% of the cases are asymptomatic, some cases can present as cold and sore throat. Post polio syndrome after recovery causes extreme muscle weakness. It was recognised as one of the most worrying childhood diseases of the 20th century. Thanks to global immunization efforts, polio cases have reduced by over 99% since 1988. However, sporadic outbreaks in certain regions have been recorded that remind us to remain vigilant and continue the efforts against this deadly disease.
The Role of Homeopathy for Complimentary Immune Support
While conventional vaccination remains absolutely necessary for polio prevention, homeopathy offers a complementary approach by focusing on strengthening the body’s natural defence mechanisms. Homeopathic medicines are known for their ability of gently stimulating the body in order to improve its immunity and increase vitality thus helping in disease prevention and management.
Some commonly prescribed homeopathic remedies for nervous system support are:
- Gelsemium sempervirens – Indicated for weakness of muscles, trembling, and weakness after acute fevers.
- Hypericum- Benchmark remedy for helping with repair of nerves
- Causticum – Helps in the management of symptoms of paralysis and nerve degeneration.
- Plumbum metallicum –Helps in cases of motor weakness and muscle wasting.
Homeopathic remedies should be taken under the guidance of a qualified homeopathic physician. We do not in any way recommend self-prescriptions.
