INFORMATION ABOUT DISEASE:
Dysmenorrhea or pain during menstruation is one of most common complaints among females of age group 13-40 yrs. It is estimated to occur in 20% to 90% of women of reproductive age. Its usual onset occurs around the ti me that menstruation begins. For most women, the pain usually starts shortly before or during their menstrual period,
peaks aft er 24 hours, and subsides aft er 2 to 3 days. The pain is usually in the pelvis or lower abdomen or may radiate to the thighs and lower back. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
It can be divided into 2 broad categories: primary (occurring in the absence of pelvic pathology) and secondary (resulting from identifi able organic diseases). The symptoms of secondary dysmenorrhea often start sooner in the menstrual cycle than those of primary dysmenorrhea, and usually last longer. When there is no underlying cause oft en the pain improves with age or following having a child.
Dysmenorrhea pain may be spasmodic (sharp pelvic cramps at the start of menstrual flow) or congestive (deep, dull ache). Pharmacotherapy is the most reliable and effective treatment for relieving dysmenorrhea. Treatment of secondary dysmenorrhea involves correction of the underlying organic cause.
