Decoding HMPV: How Homoeopathy Can Help

Owing to the recent surge in respiratory infections in China, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has recently gained significant attention. With its widespread impact on the healthcare systems, particularly pediatric hospitals, it has created a state of havoc among the general population. But it is very important to separate facts from fear since HMPV is not a new virus. Moreover, a holistic approach, including homeopathy, can offer an effective strategy for managing its impact.

Should HMPV be a concern?

Like all other pathogens, this virus has been exiting in India since decades. It was identified in 2001 itself by a group of Dutch Scientists, who had been researching on respiratory infections in the Netherlands. Since then, several studies had been conducted in India in premier institutes like National institute of Virology, Pune and AIIMS which suggests that the virus doesn’t seems to be as deadly as Corona Virus.

Factors behind the surge

The recent surge in cases of HMPV infections is attributed to the seasonal variations. Being a virus that majorly affects the respiratory system, a rise in the number of cases are seen during winter and spring season. This seems to be the reason for sudden rise of cases in China

Population at risk

While anyone can contact HMPV, it predominantly affects children under 5 years, elderly individuals, immunocompromised individuals including those having HIV, uncontrolled diabetes, persistent anemia, organ transplant recipient, pregnant females and individuals suffering from chronic respiratory conditions like Asthma, COPD, ILD and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Symptoms

The symptoms of HMPV are similar to the other respiratory infections and ranges from milder ones like coughing, sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, low grade fever and sore throat to severe ones like shortness of breath, low blood oxygen levels, persistent cough, high grade fever and fatigue.

Complications

Persistent existence of these symptoms if left untreated may even lead to lung diseases like bronchiolitis, pneumonia or even acute and severe episodic attacks of Asthma and COPD. The symptom severity varies among the infected individuals based upon the associated risk factors.

Transmission

The infection usually spreads through respiratory droplets during coughing or sneezing, by coming in direct contact with the contaminated surfaces or objects and close contact with the infected individuals.

Diagnosis

Identification of HMPV is of great importance due to its close association with other respiratory viruses like COVID-19, RSV and Influenza. However, a detailed patient history can help in differentiation of this virus but the diagnosis is typically confirmed by laboratory test like:

  1. PCR Test, a molecular test that detects the genetic material of the virus with high accuracy and is therefore regarded as the Gold Standard for diagnosing HMPV
  2. Rapid Antigen Test, which provides quick results but are less accurate
  3. Serological Test for identifying HMPV specific antibodies
  4. In certain cases, Bronchoscopy is advisable to look for changes in the lungs

A Holistic Approach to HMPV Management

  • General Interventions

Lifestyle modifications along with an individualized homoeopathic treatment can aid in providing a supportive, preventive and comprehensive approach to manage the symptom severity of HMPV. Therefore, it is essential to have a diet rich in antioxidants, zinc, Vitamin A, C and D. Adequate hydration is equally important to prevent dehydration and fatigue. Remaining physically active to ensure oxygenation of blood to improve lung health. It is also essential to take care of mental health during such times which necessitates adequate sleep to boost immunity, practicing meditation and yoga to improve brain health and calmness of mind. Frequent handwashing, wearing masks and using alcohol based sanitizer is of utmost importance to maintain hygiene.

  • Homoeopathic Management

The symptom severity of HMPV can be effectively managed by homeopathic medicines like:

Gelsemium Sempervirens – Helps in relieving flu like symptoms and cold with severe fatigue, debility, anxiety and chills.

Bryonia Alba – Aids in dry, painful cough with dull headache and left sided nasal discharge. The symptoms aggravate on movement.

Eupatorium Perfoliatum – Useful in persistent fever with severe bodyache, productive cough which aggravates during cold and damp weather and improves in dry warm weather.

Antimonium Tartaricum – The hallmark symptom if this remedy is cold skin covered with clammy sweat along with wheezing and rattling cough.

1. OMEO Flu Tablets

2. OMEO Broncholite Syrup

3. OMEO Cough Syrup

4. OMEO D-FVR Plus Syrup

5. OMEO Breathe Free Drops

6. OMEO Cough Relief Drops

7. OMEO Calendula Hand Wash

8. OMEO Hand rub

9. OMEO Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer (with Calendula)

In conclusion, while the situation remains under observation, staying vigilant, practicing preventive measures and ensuring early diagnosis with supportive care is essential in controlling the further spread of this virus and safeguarding public health.
